Ron Stewart

Ron Stewart photo Developmental Consultant Ron Stewart is an educator who has worked to foster human development for nearly 40 years. He began teaching in the 1960s, first as a youth minister, then as a Peace Corps volunteer in Brazil where he taught in a secondary school. The major part of his career was devoted to co-founding a Montessori high school in Portland, Oregon, which he directed and taught in during the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. He also taught occasional university courses related to education and human development during those years.

The primary arena of Ron’s work has now shifted from the classroom to private consulting with individuals and organizations, both in the US and Japan. He considers his current work to be a form of adult education and an extension of his earlier applications of developmental theory. Ron also continues to study human development — especially structural perspectives and process views of development grounded in integral theory. Recently, he completed certification for conducting developmental assessments with Otto Laske through the Interdevelopmental Institute and separately with Susanne Cook-Greuter.

The guiding influence, and often a central focus, in his work is an interest in the further or “higher” reaches of human development, including the development of postrational integrative or dialectical thinking. This interest is closely related to Ron’s nearly life-long exploration of the world’s wisdom traditions and to his growing understanding of spirituality as both the depth dimension of development and a particular line of development. He sees spiritual depth as the foundation for optimal higher self-system development. This depth dimension provides a supporting context for his consultation work and can also be made an explicit agenda for consultation. On a very practical level there is a pressing reason for the emphasis on further development: the higher capacities that come with postconventional development are the only means we have for dealing effectively with the growing complexity of our world, our work, and our personal lives.

Ron consults with individuals and small groups in personal and professional settings, primarily with those who feel the need for further development and who see the benefits of applying it in work and life situations. If you are interested in personal developmental transformation or want to enhance the capacities of members of your group or organization, he can work with you in a variety of ways:

  • Providing assessments and feedback detailing a person’s present stage of overall ego/self-system development as well as the current stage or phase in several of the ego’s multiple lines or strands of development, including social-emotional, cognitive, values, intercultural, and spiritual;
  • Coaching and mentoring for on-going support of individual and group development;
  • Conducting seminars, workshops, and action learning about the practical application of further development in groups and organizations. These activities can be tailored to your specific situation and needs and can have a specialized purpose, such as workshops in cognitive development for managers and leaders;
  • Teaching courses and guiding people through the relevant theoretical material and current research findings about adult development; and
  • Giving presentations on developmental topics to interested groups and organizations.

Ron lives near Portland Oregon and can be reached at 503-665-8733 or by emailing him at .
