“Introduction to Applied Developmental Theory”

NEW: Gateway Self-Study Course

The IDM Gateway course introduces professionals to applications of Developmental Theory in the service professions, based on the Constructive Developmental Framework (CDF) created at IDM. It is an introductory and overview course that supports many different kinds of consulting to clients’ mental process (process consultation), such as coaching, mentoring, management consulting, psychotherapy, mediation, and others.

The course has no preconditions. It is taught in two different modalities:

  • Live teleclass on the Certification Track
  • Partial self study with subsequent live teleclass on the Professional Development Track.

The Certification track consists of Modules A, B, and C each of which comprises six 2-hr sessions. These modules teach developmental assessment techniques insome depth, preparing attendees for writing a case study on an individual client in Module D (completion of Program One).

The Professional Development or “PD” track comprises two basic courses modeled on Modules A and B, leading to four Master Classes. The latter are focused on Change Leadership Coaching, Coaching and Mentoring Supervision, Dialectics in Life Coaching, and Dialectics in Psychotherapy, respectively. Any two of these Master Classes lead to a Certificate of Advanced Study.

The three perspectives presented in Gateway are based on cutting-edge developmental research:

  • Module A: Social-Emotional Development
  • Module B: Cognitive Development
  • Module C: Psychological balance at work.

Each of these perspectives is subsequently deepened in Modules A, B, and C of Program One. In the PD self study version of Gateway, cognitive and social-emotional process consulting are modeled on Modules A and B respectively, Module C remaining an elective.

To judge from testimonials over the years, Gateway is likely to “overthrow the apple cart” of your life (http://interdevelopmentals.org/testimonials.php). The course is a broad introduction to Applied Developmental Theory which helps you revise your view of yourself and your clients. This is because Gateway makes you aware of the fact that the social world in which you live is stratified in the sense that people live on, and act from, different levels of social-emotional meaning making and cognitive sense making, whatever culture they may belong to.

Gateway instruction stringently separates the social-emotional and cognitive development trajectories of adults. This is a first step toward understanding better how they relate to each other and influence each other in life and work. According to research, these two lines of adult development are qualitatively different and cannot be reduced to one another (as happens in the Kohlberg School and Integral School).

Gateway helps you adopt a more realistic and crisp view of yourself as well as the social world where people of different levels of development live together. You begin to see your clients in a developmental light and may begin to ask yourself: “what may be my own present developmental level, cognitively and social-emotionally, and is the way I act balanced or imbalanced in terms of the differences between cognitive and social-emotional maturity?”

In short, Gateway lives up to its name. It is a gate to walk through if you want to take responsibility for yourself.
