IDM Program One, Module D
“Developmental Assessment Case Study”
At this point in Program One, entirely practical issues come to the fore. Your task now is to find a volunteer willing to have you practice on him or her for the purpose of your case study. This volunteer should not be a family member or relation, but either a former or present client whom you want to assist in understanding herself better. This can actually help you in your coaching or consulting work with the volunteer, or even initiate an entirely new professional relationship.
It is important to let the volunteer know that feedback will not be immediate, but can only be given once your case study has been accepted and critiqued by the IDM Director of Education. You also need to inform the client that the assessment is free of charge, and is meant to help you complete your case study. Both parties thus do each other a favor. Given the importance of selecting the right volunteer, your choice of the volunteer is discussed in class.
At this point, the support and critique of your classmates is more than ever important. These people know you and know your strengths and challenges. They can provide new perspectives on your client whom they know only through you and your assessment of him, and you learn by doing the same for them.
Once your case study has been delivered to, and return with comments by, IDM, an ‘exit interview’ will be scheduled for the purpose of receiving feedback on your work, and for you to ask questions about your study that have remained unresolved in your mind. The IDM Director of Education will challenge your scorings, and will make counter-proposals prior to the exit interview that become part of the interview agenda.
Following the exit interview, you finalize your scoring decisions following your own best judgment, and edit your feedback report accordingly. All that remains to do now is to give feedback to the volunteer, taking into account his or her foremost interests and needs.
We invite you to listen to an information session answering typical questions about the learning process happening in Module D.
