IDM Program Two, Module F
“Three additional Case Studies and a Case Report for Obtaining the Certificate of Integrative Thinking in Management”
Students who have completed Gateway and Modules A, B, and D are eligible to apply for entering Program Two to obtain the Certificate of Integrative Thinking in Management. This certificate serves the needs of management students and managers whose primary interest lies in assuming leadership positions characterized by innovative, critical, and ecologically aware holistic thinking. The Certificate does not comprise teaching privileges which must be obtained separately through a licensing agreement with IDM Associates (IDMA).
Module F comprises two independent parts:
- F1 Three case studies beyond Module D, centered on a volunteer’s cognitive and social-emotional profile.
- F2 A Case Report. This is a research project about a management topic chosen by the student which demonstrates expertise in problem formulation based on dialectical thinking (taught in Module B).
While the three case studies of F1 follow the IDM format of integrating different perspectives on an individual client, the Case Report of F2 is a text of 40-50 pages that discusses a particular research problem investigated from a management perspective. The purpose of the Report is to document the student’s mastery of non-formalistic or dialectical thinking in the context of his/her profession.
In the Case Report, the student defines a particular area of research and states the reason why it is worth investigating. S(he) builds a theoretical framework based on dialectical thinking through which new knowledge about the chosen topic becomes available. The report describes the methodology to be followed, both for data collection and data interpretation, and discusses the implementation of evidence-based recommendations.
The purpose of submitting the Case Report is threefold:
- show that the problem statement lends itself to research, and how;
- develop a research methodology that lends itself to approach the problem systemically based on dialectical thinking;
- demonstrate in what way dialectical thinking helps clarify and/or ‘solve’ the chosen management problem.
The report becomes a topic of regular discussion in the cohort of students preparing for the Certificate. The Director of Education serves as a mentor for the cohort. Personal mentoring is available in four-hour blocks upon request, at extra cost (see http://www.interdevelopmentals.org/certification-mentoring.php).
Work in Module F is undertaken based on feedback on the first case study written in Module D of Program One. Module C (NP Questionnaire) is recommended but not required for completing this module. Just as Modules D and E, Module F ends with an exit interview exploring the experiences of the student and reflecting upon the results of his/her research.
The IDM Certificate of Integrative Thinking in Management can be used for credit within a Graduate School of Management, particularly Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, Canada, and the Program of Organization Assessment, Change, and Leadership in the School of Public Administration at Roger Williams University, Providence, R.I., USA.
