IDM Program Three
“Writing an Academic Thesis Using the Constructive Developmental Framework”
This program is an explicitly academic program, meant to support those who want to write a doctoral thesis using CDF in affiliation with IDM. The IDM Director of Education serves as outside reader of the dissertation committee and, potentially, as an academic coach.
Those entering Program Three may have different motivations. Someone who is intending to complete a doctoral degree may decide from the start, after Gateway, that the CDF methodology is right for him or her. Alternatively, someone may discover during studies at IDM, especially in Program Two, that it is only a small step to enlarge the number of volunteers in Program Two for the purpose of an extended “subject acquisition”. In that case, it is of benefit to have begun Program Two with the thesis in mind. Programs Two and Three can thus be merged, in that the 3 volunteers used in Program Two can become part of the larger sample used in thesis work in Program Three.
In accordance with the nature of CDF, academic studies based on CDF are predominantly qualitative. In cases where CDF assessments results are aggregated upward to a larger sample, say for two different groups with 4-6 subjects each or larger, a substantial quantitative component can be introduced into the thesis. (For instance, somebody may want to research learning or performance effects in two different teams, one working with, and another one without, a coach.)
