The IDM Dialectics in Coaching Program *NEW*

The History of Coaching is Moving On...

A seismic shift is occurring in the coaching world! The shift is one toward developmentally better grounded coaching work, away from purely behavioral and psychological work. From Australia to South America, it is becoming clear that without a knowledge of applied developmental theory little effective coaching can be done, despite all the intriguing schemes that have been invented since the 1990s.

IDM is in the forefront of this movement, both through its teaching experience and Otto Laske's research and writing. IDM adds to this movement Laske's expertise in dialectical thinking which derives from the Frankfurt School (1926-1976). Since 2000 we have taught applied adult-developmental theory from a social-emotional, cognitive, and psychoanalytical point of view, something nowhere else to be found to this day. A large number of teaching and assessment experiences as well as materials (written and recorded) have accumulated through which we intend to assist the coaching world in making the shift described above.

Dialectics in Coaching Program Overview

For this purpose, IDM is introducing the Dialectics in Coaching Program, a program unique in the world of coaching, headed by coaching and dialectical thinking pioneer Otto Laske.

Dialectics refers to the pervasive discipline of teaching systemic thinking in unifying three different but complementary perspectives — cognitive, social-emotional, and psychoanalytic — into a differentiated holistic view of the coaching client.

The program permits trained coaches without any knowledge of applied developmental theory to learn "developmental listening" and "developmental thinking" from scratch, through self study followed by live courses.

The following diagram captures the structure of the program:

Overview and course sequence of the IDM Dialectics in Coaching Program

In more detail, the program is structured as follows [see pricing below]:

  • The program is entered through Self-Study Gateway, an introductory course that introduces to three complementary perspectives on clients. Once self study Gateway has been taken, the coach proceeds to Social-Emotional Coaching (Module A), and subsequently to Cognitive Coaching (Module B) and Psychoanalytic Coaching (Module C).
  • These self study courses lead to live coaching classes, namely:
    • Dialectics in Coaching I (presupposes Module A)
    • Dialectics in Coaching Coaching II (presupposes Modules A and B)
    • Dialectics in Coaching Coaching III (presupposes Modules A, B, and C)
    • Dialectics in Coaching Master Class (Developmental Coaching IV), focused on the practical hands-on mastery of what was learned in Developmental Coaching III.

The Dialectics in Coaching Master Class leads to the IDM Dialectics in Coaching Certificate.

Differences with Conventional Coaching Programs (academic or not)

  • Dialectics is nowhere taught from its roots in Hegel and the Frankfurt School except at IDM. Introduced into coaching, it revolutionizes the way coaching is seen with a focus on the systemic thinking presence of the coach.
  • In this sense, the new program revolutionizes coach education. It broadens coaches' knowledge base from "this or that" approach to a thorough and comprehensive grounding in applied developmental theory practiced dialectically. All previously acquired coaching knowledge is refurbished from a systemic theory-of-knowledge perspective, no matter what has been its origin.
  • The Dialectics in Coaching Certificate is thoroughly practice-oriented. It documents the theoretical and practical savvy of the coach as a professional thinker of high standing, and represents the most prestigious continuing education credential in existence in the coaching world.
  • The Dialectics in Coaching Program separates as well as integrates "psychology" (Module C) and "epistemology" [theory of knowledge] (Modules A and B), thereby achieving a uniquely comprehensive perspective on human beings in general, coaching clients in particular, and coaches themselves.
  • By integrating the three coaching perspectives based on their strict separation, the Program challenges coaches to analytically distinguish and practically synthesize three autonomous dimensions of consciousness into a "transformational" lens by way of dialectical thinking. Through this lens, clients' issues become transparent in a way not possible when teaching only "this or that" perspective based on formal logic. This is achieved by learning and practicing dialectical thinking throughout the entire program.

Classes From a Birds Eye Perspective

The Dialectics in Coaching Program comprises self study followed by live courses, the former preceding the latter. In the self study portion of the program, participants accumulate the theoretical background needed for working as a developmental coach: social-emotional (Module A), cognitive (Module B), and psychological (Module C). In the live courses, participants learn to "walk the talk" of what they learned previously, step by step:

  • Dialectics in Coaching I [4 x 2-hr sessions] requires only Module A, and consists of practical exercises and class discussions about the social-emotional meaning making of clients and the relationship of coach to client.
  • Dialectics in Coaching II [4 x 2-hr sessions] presupposes both Modules A and B and is focused on integrating the social-emotional and cognitive perspectives on the client.
  • Dialectics in Coaching III [4 x 2-hr sessions] presupposes Modules A, B, and C and is focused on integrating the developmental and behavioral perspective on clients acquired.
  • Dialectics in Coaching Master Class [6 x 2-hr sessions] rehearses the free-flowing and dialectically disciplined use of all perspectives comprised by the Constructive Developmental Framework (CDF). The Master Class is based on the discussion of recorded conversations with clients which are analyzed in depth, as well as coaching role plays supervised and critiqued by both members of the class and the instructor (acting as a mentor/supervisor).

Dialectics in Coaching Courses Together Make Up a Consistent Developmental Path

Going through the Dialectics in Coaching Program is in itself a developmental journey. Each course helps accumulate additional knowledge and expertise in developmental listening and dialectical thinking. Beginning from academic or non-academic programs derived from NLP, ontological coaching, positive psychology coaching, SOI, business coaching, or "integral" approaches — all based on formal logical thinking — the student sharpens his/her knowledge and understanding of how clients answer for themselves three questions crucial in life as well as work:

  • What should I do and for whom? (the social-emotional question focal in Module A)
  • What can I do and what are my options? (the cognitive question focal in Module B)
  • How am I doing? (the psychological question focal in Module C).

Furthermore, each self study and/or live class is increasingly integrative in that it challenges participants to think dialectically, bringing together in their mind and practice multiple perspectives on clients and themselves. The dialectical practice of thinking holistically and systemically is the hallmark of all IDM programs.

The IDM Dialectics in Coaching Certificate

Program participants receive this prestigious certificate documenting their ability to do evidence-based coaching work of a scope and depth not taught, or even aimed for, in any other coaching program in the world. The certificate documents knowledge of the structure of organizations in the sense of Elliott Jaques' Requisite Organization, teachings of the Frankfurt School (especially in Module B) and the Kohlberg School (in both Modules A and B), and supersedes all less integrative coaching certificates.

Registration

Being an adult, you can follow your own learning style by initially working on your own before learning to walk the talk of dialectical practice in coaching. Start with Gateway Self Study to become familiar with the breadth of the Program and the three perspectives included in the IDM Constructive Developmental Framework (CDF). From there, proceed to Module A to learn enough theory for coaching from a social-emotional perspective. Then take up Module B and add a dialectical coaching background to your palette. Finally, integrate psychoanalytical knowledge about clients in Module C, in order to achieve a wide-scoped and rounded view of WHO YOUR CLIENT IS.

IDM Self-Study Mentoring

IDM Self-Study Mentoring supports students in their work on mastering IDM teaching materials through self-study before entering a live class in which the learned content will be practiced in a like-minded cohort. Since the self-study materials — both written and recorded — are so rich, they may raise questions for the student that need to be answered in a manner specific to his/her personal needs. For this reason, IDM offers personal mentoring for those needing it to succeed with their self study. For details see Self-Study Mentoring.
