IDM CAN MOVE YOUR PRACTICE FORWARD!
By Otto Laske
A sincere welcome to 2006 to our readers! As is true for us at IDM, you will be sharpening your goals and ways to achieve them. WE CAN HELP YOU!
We know the benefits of understanding your clients developmentally, and we know what it takes to learn the necessary techniques. We also know that developmental thinking doesn’t come to you all at once, in a fell swoop. As shown in Chapter 9 of MEASURING HIDDEN DIMENSIONS the new textbook on developmental stages that comes out in paperback on January 23rd (see HD Book and HD Ebooks) there are 7 steps you need to take in order to fully leverage developmental knowledge.
The first three steps have to do with increasingly recognizing the relevance of your understanding of your clients' social-emotional and cognitive grasp of the world. The remaining four steps concern the refining of professional uses of developmental information through practice. In 2006, we will be particularly concerned with the first three steps: preparing coaches and consultants to leverage developmental knowledge!

IDM 2006 GOALS
In 2006, we are focusing on the following four goals:
1. Helping beginners to think developmentally
As this year matures, you will see IDM increasingly active in supporting the beginners in developmental coaching. We will do this in two ways:
- Short (4-hr) courses in learning to think developmentally given every month
- Medium-long (8-hr) courses in developmental interviewing starting every 2 months
2. Continuing to build community
With the IDM Press Flagship book, a textbook for Program One, now available through IDM Press, we continue to build a community of developmental practitioners of process consultation and coaching. Based on this book, participants in our courses will learn to speak a common language, not only in class but in their practice and communications!
3. Offering a free teleforum on WHO ARE YOU AS A COACH OR CONSULTANT?
If you tell us how you view and approach your client, we can tell you, based on our developmental thinking, who you ARE as a practitioner. This has nothing to do with mind reading. It simply means that the way you “paint” your client is intimately linked to how you see yourself as a person and a professional, and that shedding light on the way you model clients is highly beneficial to your practice.
The free teleforum comes attached with an offer to assess developmentally “Who you are as a practitioner” for an affordable fee.
4. Publishing volume 2 of Measuring Hidden Dimensions
Volume 2, now in progress, is the second textbook for IDM students. The volume is focused on the cognitive development of coach/consultant and clients, and helps students find out HOW TO ASSIST CLIENTS IN THEIR COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT.
As is apparent from Volume 1, there is a close link between performance, on one hand, and developmental level and cognitive profile, on the other. Therefore, expert coaches strongly focus attention on this link, by using actionable developmental knowledge learned at IDM.

INVITATION 1: Free Developmental Assessment
Win a free developmental assessment for yourself or your client, by sharing with us a 1-page profile of your client.
As you come to understand by reading the e-book or paperback version of MEASURING HIDDEN DIMENSIONS, what we know about our clients is a reflection of how we presently think about ourselves. We herewith invite you to send us a one-pager about how you see one of your clients. We, the Editors, will provide personal feedback both about yourself and your client to the first ten readers who respond. Whoever sends us the most cogent client profile, will win a free developmental assessment either for herself (himself) or a client.
Here are the parameters to take into account when writing your one-pager: Describe as precisely as you can:
- how you yourself "see" your client, in terms of the client’s potential
- how your client sees her-/himself in his/her environment in relation to individual others or the organization as a whole
- how your client is using the coaching in terms of self-directed progress
- what you pay particular attention to in the client’s language.
Please mail your client profile to
.
INVITATION 2: Free Teleforum on Who You Are as a Professional
It takes some critical thinking about how you approach clients to become aware of your own assumptions about yourself as a coach. The purpose of the IDM teleforum is to expand your developmental perspective through the window of your current view of your client. Our free teleforums can help you to gain some distance from your own assumptions. In these teleforums either in English or German we introduce you to developmental ideas based on hearing you describe your way of working with, and your view of, your particular clients.
