Interdevelopmental Institute
Hidden Dimension Insights Reaching into the Hidden Dimension of Coaching
December 2004 Vol. 1.1

Dear Reader!

Welcome to the first edition of the bi-monthly Newsletter of the Interdevelopmental Institute (IDM)! In this Newsletter, we address questions pertaining to the promises and issues of research-based coaching, both in coaching practice and coach education. In line with our mission to introduce into coaching the methods of research in adult development, we emphasize what is empirically known today about how coaches and clients as adults grow in maturity and capability over the lifespan. We thereby emphasize the importance of what coach and client "bring to the table" when coaching begins. In this way, we provoke our readers to reflect on the influence of their own life development (not simply career development) on the way they 'see' clients, coach, and assess coaching effectiveness.

In this Newsletter, we want to share with you our thoughts about the path of evidence based coaching, and tell you on a regular basis what the Interdevelopmental Institute (IDM) is doing to promote the use of research in coaching practice and coach education. We propose that coach education differs from "coach training," in that it is a scientifically grounded enterprise transcending the teaching of skills, and linking directly to coaches' self development as lifelong learners. We thereby tap what is today a "hidden dimension" in coaching, namely, adult development.

With this Newsletter, then, we want to assist you in putting your own frame of reference on the line, by becoming curious as to where am I developmentally?, both regarding yourself and in relationship to your client. We will point you to tools, media, courses of instruction, and teaching, marketing, employment, and research opportunities that can enrich your coaching practice as much as your personal and professional development.

  • Article 1 :: What is the Hidden Dimension of Coaching?

As research gradually peels back the many layers of what is called coaching, one dimension in particular stands out by way of its absence: the "vertical" dimension where adults experience not only behavioral "change" (the horizontal dimension), but developmental "shifts." The hiddenness of this dimension is at least twofold.

Article 2 :: FAQs about Developmental Coaching

There are a number of questions people typically ask about developmental coaching, some of which appear below, followed by an answer.

    1. What will education in developmental coaching do for me as a person and my career that I can't find elsewhere?
    2. Developmental coach education is focused on your personal potential in the sense of reaching a higher "developmental level;" it cuts through all types of coaching, underlying all that is taught at other coaching schools.

    3. What is it that is transformative about developmental coaching?
    4. You learn about the transcultural laws and patterns of adult development over the lifespan, and about how cognitive and social-emotional development intersect in deep, revealing ways.

Article 3 :: What Happened in Quebec City?

The Second IFC Coaching Research Symposium took a further step toward consolidating research as the leading force in strengthening the effectiveness and legitimacy of coaching worldwide.

180 coaches and researchers from the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia converged in their agenda of learning more about basic coaching processes, new client models, advantages of coaching over other training modalities, assessment of coaching effectiveness, research in coaching outcome, and research-based training. There was a consensus that coach training needs to establish itself on a research- based foundation, or fail to support the growing need for effective coaching by scientist-practitioner coaches.

    What's to Come

In coming issues of the Newsletter, we will print articles about unexplored aspects of developmental coaching, ideas and information about developmental coach education (at IDM and elsewhere), and the tie-in between developmental, cognitive, and spiritual coaching.

We will also introduce a perspective on coaching as Capability Management in organizations, a new avenue toward increasing the effectiveness of business coaching, and discuss issues pertaining to research-based coach education and certification.

HOW DOES DEVELOPMENTAL COACHING FURTHER YOUR OWN PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT?

If R. Kegan is right in saying that "being a person" is synonymous with "being engaged in the process of meaning making," and if "being a coach" is synonymous with "understanding how clients make meaning of themselves, their environment, and the coaching relationship," then obviously learning how to discern differences in how different adults make meaning at different points in their lifespan development is of great advantage to the coaching profession.
