INTERDEVELOPMENTAL INSTITUTE (IDM) LAUNCHES ITS OWN PRESS AND A FLAGSHIP BOOK

IDM has established the Interdevelopmental Institute Press, a publishing house for literature supporting evidence based process consultation. In order to support consultants, coaches, mentors, facilitators, mediators, social workers, and applied psychologists, IDM Press will publish both practice-oriented and foundational materials. IDM Founder Otto Laske will act as Director, Nancy Moynihan as Co-Director, and Greg Welstead as Administrative/Technical Director.

IDM Press publishes materials that support professionals in understanding their clients rather than rushing in to help them. It is its mission to facilitate critical reflection on the art and science of fully engaging adults. We will emphasize the developmental demands of helping others as well as the developmental value of professional services based on knowing your clients in depth.

The first book off the press is Otto Laske’s MEASURING HIDDEN DIMENSIONS, volume 1, on the Art and Science of Fully Engaging Adults. The book is a textbook and handbook that teaches developmental thinking in interviewing, giving feedback to, and structuring interventions with clients. The book is now for sale. We are hoping that the book will transform the notion of coaching by transforming professionals’ thinking about the educational requirements of helping adults realize their potential.

We invite you to visit our website at http://interdevelopmentals.org/ebooks.html to learn about the ebook version of the book as a whole and its parts, and to read a book description and reviews at http://interdevelopmentals.org/book.html.

Volume 1 will be available as a paperback in January of 2006 through the IDM Press. Already in December, volume 1 will also appear as a series of e-books. E-book and book orders will be accepted at http://interdevelopmentals.org/book.html.

Short Description of IDM Courses

A thumb nail sketch of the focus of all IDM courses is found below.

At the present time, courses are taught in English and German. For learning the start time of courses, go to www.interdevelopmentals.org/schedule.html, or consult the recent IDM Hidden Dimension Insights Newsletter that appears monthly.

IDM Courses are of two kinds:

  1. Non-certificate Courses
  2. Certificate Courses.

Certification Courses lead to a Certificate in Developmental Assessment (Course One), and the designation of Certified Developmental Consultant (or Coach), respectively (Course Two). Course Three consists of mentoring for the sake of writing a Masters or doctoral thesis based on the IDM constructive-developmental framework.

For a more detailed description of Certification Courses, go to www.interdevelopmentals.org/certificationcourses.html and www.interdevelopmentals.org/certification.pdf.

Switching from one track to another can be discussed by making an appointment with the Director of Education, Dr. Otto Laske.

CERTIFICATION COURSES

Hidden Dimension Workshop (Verborgene Dimensionen Workshop)

Participants are introduced to using developmental thinking skills in consulting and coaching, with an emphasis on the theoretical framework of adult stages. No preconditions.

Gateway [16 course hrs.]

Participants learn about “main” and “intermediate” social-emotional stages and complete elementary exercises in developmental interviewing. (HD participants can enter this course with reduced tuition.) Gateway has no prerequisites, but is a precondition for participating in Course One.

COURSE ONE [32 weeks or 8 months, with 1-2 months for submitting a case study; 80 ICF coach training credits]

The basic IDM course. Participants learn how to hold three different perspectives on the client: social-emotional (A), cognitive (B), and behavioral (C). Participation in this course is a pre-requisite for Courses Two and Three.

Course One, Module A

Participants gain solid and fluent knowledge of social-emotional stage theory and its applications in process consultation and coaching. A developmental assessment of participants prior to, or during, Module A is strongly recommended. Textbook: Measuring Hidden Dimensions, volume 1 (2005/6).

Course One, Module B

Participants learn to take a cognitive perspective on clients, and the specific interviewing that perspective requires. They reflect on their use of thought forms and concepts in relation to their clients, and learn how to challenge and boost their clients’ thinking. Textbook: Measuring Hidden Dimensions, volume 2 (2006).

Course One, Module C

Participants use a detailed behavioral assessment (‘Need/ Press’) for gauging a client’s unconscious strength and bottlenecks in self conduct, task approach, and interpersonal perspective in the work place. They learn how to relate questionnaire data to the developmental perspectives taught in Modules A and B, and thereby explain them.

Course One, Module D

Participants carrying out their first client case study are supervised by the instructor in how they are using the tools learned in Modules A to C. They are mentored in synthesizing all three perspectives learned on a client, and readied for submitting their data to IDM in order to obtain a Certificate in Developmental Assessment.

COURSE TWO [3 months; 45 ICF coach training hrs.]

Participants attend a Master Class based on engaging with three further case studies by which to make their developmental expertise become ‘second nature.’ The instructor intermittently serves as a consultant to their process, and as a supervisor of their work. At the end of three months, participants submit their data to IDM in order to be certified as a Developmental Consultant or Coach.

COURSE THREE [variable duration; 40 ICF coach training hrs.]

Participants engage in academic research based on IDM’s constructive-developmental framework (CDF), in order to complete a Masters or doctoral thesis at a university or college of their choice. The instructor serves as an academic coach and mentor, and as a co-reader of their thesis or dissertation.

NON-CERTIFICATE COURSES

Free Monthly Teleforum [English & German; 1 hr]

Participants learn about a specific topic in developmental coaching; alternatively, they are introduced to IDM course offerings and other IDM resources.

Mastering Developmental Listening in Coaching [4 hrs.]

Participants acquire deeper insight into the technique of developmental interviewing specifically in coaching.

Understanding Your Coaching Strengths and Bottlenecks [17 hrs.]

Participants complete a behavioral assessment based on whose interpretation in class they learn about their own strengths and potential bottlenecks in working with coaching clients. A 1-hr personal feedback on their personal data by the instructor is part of the course.

Business Coaching for Potential [16 hrs.]

Participants learn how to administer and interpret behavioral data forthcoming from clients, and how to gear their coaching to particular coaching needs the client cannot be fully aware of.
