Supervising Coaches and Mentors Through Process Consulting

This course presupposes Gateway self study and at least one of the two process consulting courses. It is a master class for practicing cognitive and social-emotional process consulting in the domain of supervision. Such a course is presently not available in the field, and thus represents a pioneering step. The concept of “supervision” in this course is to be taken broadly. It includes attention to the practice of management consultants working with higher-level executives as leadership coaches.

The notion in this master class is that knowing about clients’ cognitive and social-emotional development over the lifespan, as well as having an awareness of one’s own developmental wherewithal, greatly assists in guiding clients’ work. For that reason, obtaining one’s own developmental assessment is highly beneficial (see our Assessment Services page). Being able to assess how far a client can think holistically and systemically is a pre-condition for modeling “better thinking” for him or her, and provides novel tools for challenging and broadening a client’s mind.

In this course, mind opening is accomplished by using dialectical thought forms together with the Three-Houses framework learned in the cognitive process consulting course. Participants learn how to assist clients in acquiring an elementary “common sense dialecticism” that is already part of parcel of Asian individuals influenced by Chinese culture.

The class is geared to professionals who want to enlarge and deepen their tool box for making clients more highly expert and self-reflective. Participants work as a cohort, analyzing and elucidating client cases as well as their own practice. By rehearsing interventions based on dialectical thinking, participants enhance their breadth of perspective, flexibility, and depth of openness with each other, assisted by the instructor who is an experienced cognitive and social-emotional process consultant.
