Dialectics in Psychotherapy Master Class

NOTE: This class is presently not in the IDM curriculum but will be added back upon demand. For inquiries, please contact us.

Psychotherapy practice today is predominantly social-emotionally oriented, with a focus on the patient’s self image. The self image is seen as the root of mental health. The fact that this image is a product of thought is not always realized, and if it is, only in the behavioral sense of the term ‘thought’.

This course is structured to enrich psychotherapy practice by instilling in the practitioner dialectical thinking, a kind of thinking that transcends logical thinking and is implicit in spiritual approaches more or less clearly.

Dialectical thinking is essentially a discovery procedure which greatly expands the mental space otherwise constrained by formal logic. Developmental research shows that adult thinking naturally extends into dialectical thinking once logical thinking is in place, around age 25. The process of extension has been shown to occur in four phases (Basseches, 1984; Laske, 2008). Practitioners greatly benefit from knowing in what phase of dialectical thinking the patient is presently making sense of him- or herself and the world. The same holds for the practitioner him- or herself.

Beyond deepened diagnostic knowledge, this master class conveys to practitioners a new method of guiding patients in the broadening and clarifying of their self image. To use the method requires from the practitioner a way of thinking holistically and systemically. In operational terms, this entails learning dialectical thought forms and practicing their use as Mind Openers. In this master class, practitioners learn about the four Quadrants of Dialectic, and the way they give rise to diagnostic as well as supportive interventions that clarify patients’ understanding of their presentation problem and its behavioral symptoms.

Participation in this master class presupposes knowledge of cognitive process consulting, which in turn requires Gateway self study. The textbook for the class is volume 2 of Measuring Hidden Dimensions of Human Systems, published in the Fall of 2008 by IDM Press. Obtaining a developmental assessment prior to or during the master class is highly recommended since it enhances clarity about the practitioner’s use of self in psychotherapy.
