Social-Emotional Process Consulting for Professionals

This course presupposes the Gateway self study course. It uses hypothesis formulation and testing to probe for a client’s present level of meaning making. The probing is made precise by verbal cues called ‘prompts’ selected by the client and probed by the consultant. Since the prompts enable the client to ‘project’ him- or herself into a particular state of mind, the nature of the conversation with the client can be called ‘projective’, in the sense that the content of the client’s speech will reveal his or her level of meaning making. Emphasis in the consultation therefore lies on “what comes to mind” in a client when speaking to a particular prompt, including the person’s emotions that inevitably come into play when s(he) selects certain prompts over others.

As in the cognitive case, the consultant must be an astute listener, and this ability is mightily strengthened by learning the Constructive Developmental Framework. Technically, the consultant tests a set of hypotheses regarding the level of responsibility a client can presently take for him- or herself. These hypotheses are ultimately intuitions grounded in knowing developmental stage theory. Probing based on prompts leads to an understanding of how the client positions him- or herself to self, others, and the social world at large. This insight, in turn, makes possible cogent interventions such as modeling higher stages of development than the client can presently muster, and diminishing the client’s developmental risk of regressing to lower levels of meaning making under duress or intimidation.
