IDM Certification in Evidence Based Coaching

A Research-Based Practice Program for the Advanced Coaching Professional

The principal advance at IDM over coaching programs worldwide has always been the fact that our programs are based on actual assessments of clients in the context of the Constructive Developmental Framework (CDF). For those for whom talk about development is not enough, these programs are programs of choice.

While our approach now, after more than 10 years, begins to be followed at some advanced universities (e.g., University of Sydney), the practice of assessing clients’ cognitive development as an independent line remains absent, as does the separation of the social-emotional from the cognitive line of adult development and their integration with knowledge of clients’ work place psychology.

IDM Certificate in Evidence Based Coaching

In order to bring the emphasis on qualitative research as a basis of coaching practice — “evidence based coaching” — into the open more forcefully, IDM is offering the Evidence Based Coaching Program as an additional professional practice track for coaches worldwide.

The hallmark of this program is the separation of social-emotional from cognitive development as a topic of instruction. This separation is meant to permit students to deepen their knowledge of a single CDF dimension. As a result, along this certification track we offer three distinct programs for students to choose from:

  • Track #1 leading to a Certificate of Evidence Based Social-Emotional Coaching
  • Track #2 leading to a Certificate of Evidence Based Cognitive Coaching
  • Track #3 leading to a Certificate of Evidence Based Behavioral Coaching.

IDM Gateway remains the mandatory entry program for these tracks since it conveys the broad scope of coaching against which to evaluate and practice one of the three specialized tracks above.

Along Track #1, it is the student’s task to focus on social-emotional coaching issues and to show through 3 case studies that s(he) masters CDF tools at a professional level (that is, in a way sufficient for an evidence based specialist in “social-emotional coaching”).

Tracks #2 and #3 are laid out correspondingly. Through this specialization, evidence based coaching is given a research base that is co-extensive with past and present research and simultaneously contributes to future research.

As in previous programs, the student’s assessment and interviewing skills are documented in case studies, three altogether. This number of case studies has been shown over a decade to be a minimum for in-depth theoretical knowledge and ethical practice of CDF.

The case study involves inviting 3 volunteers (not clients) for the sake of assessing them through structured interviews, after which feedback is given to them based on feedback on the studies from the Director of Education. In this way, interrater-reliability is assured.

The IDM Director of Education and Training takes responsibility for the student’s first attempts at using CDF without any harm being done, following the first mandate of the American Psychological Association “to do no harm”.

In structuring the new Certification Program, we follow the model of CDF training adopted since 2000. As a result, the program comprises the following Modules:

  1. Introductory Gateway [2x6=12 hrs live class]
  2. Module A OR B OR C, depending on the student’s choice – social-emotional, cognitive, or behavioral/psychological focus [2x6=12 hrs of live class]
  3. Module Prep-D for preparing 3 case studies, essentially focused on the practice of developmental interviewing [2x2=4 hrs of live class]
  4. Module E for class discussions of student materials in preparation of 3 case studies – interview transcripts or psychological assessment data [8x2=16 hrs of live class]

In total you receive 42 hrs of live teleclass instruction [outside of Gateway], thus 42 additional continuing education credits along the ICF portfolio route.

Courses in this program can be paid per course — please enquire. A 10% discount is given for registering for all course modules at once.

Upon registration, participants receive study materials and a link for accessing a recording of each session. They are invited to join IDMSpace, a chat room for discussion and exchange of homework.
