IDM Introduces a Professional Development Program
After 8 years of concentrating on instruction leading to Certificates in developmental process consultation, IDM introduced an entirely new slew of courses directly addressing the busy professional who needs to channel his or her learning directly into effectiveness at work. While no less evidence based than the certification courses, the new courses are designed to encourage self study of developmental theory combined with live-teleclass rehearsal of new consulting techniques.
The purpose of the professional development courses is threefold:
- Open up new domains such as psychotherapy, mentoring, supervision, life coaching and spiritual growth to developmental practice.
- Allow practitioners to quickly assimilate developmental thinking into their practice.
- Permit those with an academic bent to practice process consulting in small cohorts formed by people holding multiple perspectives on clients.
The new courses share a common structure, that of preparatory courses on the one hand, and master classes on the other. Preparatory courses are entirely or partly self study, while master classes are entirely live. The term ‘master class’ points to the successful acquisition of developmental thinking that is brought to bear on a variety of service professions.
In a first step, IDM has introduced two master classes:
- Leader as Coach
- Coaching and Mentoring Supervision.
Three others are to follow this summer (2008):
- Dialectical Thinking in Psychotherapy
- Dialectical Life Coaching
- Dialectical Thinking and the Search for Wisdom.

IDM introduces a Certificate of Integrative Thinking in Management
Integrative thinking is a competency and stance increasingly needed in organizational management and leadership positions. The meaning of the term comprises different approaches. At IDM, it specifically indicates the ability of thinking holistically and systemically based on principles of dialectical thinking as taught in Module B of Program One. Dialectical thinking comprises discovery procedures out of reach for formalistic and bureaucratic thinking.
The new Certificate requires participation in IDM Gateway and Modules A, B, and D, as well as in Modules F1 and F2. Module F1 focuses on the assessment of three individual volunteers (beyond Module D), while Module F2 regards a 40-50 pp Case Report on a management topic chosen by the student. The Case Report is centered around a research problem in for-profit management or public administration.
Module F terminates with two exit interviews In the first, the candidate submits three additional case studies and interviews a volunteer (F1), while in the second s(he) discusses the implementation of evidence-based policies discussed in the Case Report. The tuition for obtaining the ITM Certificate is $5,575.
For further details on this Certificate, see our Certification page or write to Dr. Otto Laske at or call 781.391.2361.
IDM introduces Case Study Mentoring
The written Case Study, whether for obtaining a Certificate of Developmental Assessment or a Certificate of Developmental Interviewing & Supervision, is the gold standard of IDM graduation. Depending on the certificate, it requires a single case study (Program One) or 4 case studies (Program Two).
In order to assist students with issues of scoring social-emotional or cognitive interviews and/or the developmental interpretation of behavioral data based on the Need/Press Questionnaire, as well as issues of how to write an IDM feedback report and give clients feedback, the Director of Education has introduced a new offering called Case Study Mentoring. See Mentoring for details.
For personal questions about case study mentoring, write to Dr Otto Laske at or call 781.391.2361.
IDM introduces a Certificate of Developmental Interviewing
Developmental interviewing is a skill taught in IDM Modules A and B of Program One, as well as in Module Prep-D. Due to demand for learning and teaching this kind of interviewing and using it in one’s coaching work, IDM’s Director of Education is introducing a Certificate of Developmental Interviewing. The tuition for obtaining the Certificate is $4,000.
The certificate requires prior participation in IDM Gateway and Modules A and B, as well as in Module E. To obtain this certificate, participants submit to IDM four case studies based on 4 social-emotional and 4 cognitive interviews with volunteers. Module E terminates with an exit interview in which the candidate interviews a volunteer. The interview is listened to, in part, by the Director of Education who wants to be assured of the quality of interviewing the candidate is practicing.

Foundations of Integrative Thinking: Understanding Yourself and Others Better
Seminar in Brussels, June 2008
Dr. Otto Laske, Boston/USA
Interdevelopmental Institute
Topic
A lot more is known today about adult thinking than 50 years ago. This seminar introduces managers, supervisors, consultants, teachers, trainers, and coaches to understanding the growth and structure of their own thinking. It covers an aspect of management and consulting rarely considered in a systematic way. The seminar is based on Otto Laske’s expanded model of human capability, derived from research by Basseches, Jaques, King & Kitchener and others. For the first time it becomes possible to gain an insider’s understanding of a fundamental aspect of human action and leadership.
What You Will Learn
In the seminar, you will learn about the four phases of thought development you traverse as an adult, and the practical consequences of this development. You will understand how adults grow in their capability to handle complex situations systemically, and how this helps them when dealing with ill-structured problems. Primarily, you acquire tools for going beyond the stage of integrative thinking you have already reached, and for listening to what people say more deeply. The seminar provides you with tools for developing your clients’, reports’ and students’ thinking more forcefully.
Using practical cases, short and focused theoretical inputs, live demonstration, analysis of interview fragments, work in peer groups and seminar discussions, the instructor demonstrates how integrative ‘dialectical’ thinking works. Participants learn how such thinking manifests itself; how one can recognize it through the lens of structured interviews; how to measure it, and how to intervene based on cognitive assessment.
About the Instructor: Otto Laske is a student of Th.W. Adorno, M. Basseches, E. Jaques, M. Horkheimer, R. Kegan, and H. Simon. He is the Founder and Director of the Inter-developmental Institute (IDM), Boston, MA, USA, where he has dedicated himself to making developmental psychology research applicable in practice since 1999.

Entwicklungsphasen des Denkens entschlüsseln lernen
Seminar 13.-14. 06. 2008, Berlin, Germany Dr. Otto Laske, Boston/USA
Inhalt
Zielgruppe
Berater, Coaches, Supervisoren, Personal- und Organisationsentwickler, Mitarbeiter von Personalabteilungen, Trainer sowie Führungskräfte.
