IDM Assessments
GETTING TO KNOW WHERE YOU ARE DEVELOPMENTALLY:
An important step toward taking responsibility
for yourself, your life, and your professional work.
Have you ever wondered what lies ahead for you? To gain insight that, you first need to know how you presently make meaning of your life, or as we say at IDM "where you presently are developmentally"! IDM Assessments are about how you experience yourself, others, and the social world at large. They are unique in their transformative impact on your life. This is because they make explicit what you can know only dimly, and provide you with a map for exploring new territory.
When you come to think about it, there are only three really important questions that you are always entertaining, namely:
- What can I do what are my options?
- What should I do, and for whom?
- How do I conduct myself, approach my goals, and affiliate with others?
IDM assessments give answers to these crucial questions, and the relationship between the answers you give to each of them. More specifically, we use three separate assessments whose results, when brought together in a feedback report that we share with you, put you in the know. We don’t only describe your behavior and inclinations. We also explain to you why you manifest the behavior that can be observed, and what are potential reasons of why you find that behavior hard to change right now.
In short, we make you understand developmental conflicts and help you resolve them.
PROCEDURE
Here is what we do:
- When you sign up for an assessment, we send you a well researched and validated questionnaire called the Need/Press Questionnaire. Once you answer the questions it contains, we can tell you things about yourself that you could never know because they are outside of your consciousness. It takes only 45 minutes to fill out this questionnaire.
- Shortly thereafter, we invite you to a one-hour Cognitive Interview in which we lead you through Three Houses: the world of your tasks, your environment, and your self. We engage you in a discussion about each of these aspects of your life and work, and from the interview content distill your cognitive profile. This profile tells us "how you think"; more precisely, how fluid and systemically you think, and what obstacles there are purely in your thinking that could impede developmental progress in your life.
- Lastly, we invite you to a one-hour Social-Emotional Interview. In this second interview, we engage you in discussion about your life and/or work using ten "verbal prompts", such as "control". You select 3-4 prompts that are most salient for you, and we do our best to stand in your shoes in terms of how it feels to be you.
In both interviews, we follow your lead. Our task is to understand you as fully as possible, by coming as close as we can to your present way of conceptualizing what is “real” for you, and to how you make meaning of your experiences.
Following these three assessments, we evaluate what we find in your material based on validated methods of interview and questionnaire analysis. Our evaluations have high inter-rater reliability, which means that outside developmental experts would reach a strong consensus when asked to read and interpret your material.
OUTCOMES
Here are the major findings from the three assessments briefly described above:
- How you presently relate to yourself and position yourself toward others.
- The developmental potential you have for moving to a subsequent developmental level.
- The risk you run to make meaning from a lower developmental level than you have already reached.
- The fluidity of your thinking in terms of how readily you discern processes, see contexts, relate events and situations.
- The strength of your capability to see the world and yourself systemically, as organic entities, thereby enabling you to make the best choices you can make.
- The way you typically conduct yourself based on ingrained needs.
- The way you approach your tasks and work, whether private or organizational.
- The interpersonal perspective you take on others and society at large.
- The pressures you impose on yourself in terms of your "shoulds", and how to befriend yourself more deeply.
- The pressure social reality around you exerts on you, and how to diminish your frustration if any.
When we combine these major findings (as we do in the feedback session), what emerges is a comprehensive DEVELOPMENTAL PROFILE. Based on this profile, you can, with or without our help, restructure your life & career goals, and gain more acceptance of WHO YOU ARE. Even if there is nothing to "change", you’ll know at a deeper level who you are and what are your options.
If, in addition, you follow courses at the Interdevelopmental Institute, you will be ahead of the curve in progressing through Program One, since you have yourself experienced the assessments you are learning in that program. This will make you a better developmental listener and process consultant, whether you are a psychologist, coach, teacher, or consultant.
